Dodsley, 1783. 4to, 235 x 175 mms., pp. xxi [xxii - xxiii contents, xxiv blank], 290 [291 - 293 Index, 294 blank, engraved portrait of Grammont as frontispiece, further engraved portraits of Hamilton opposite page [iv], and of Cometesse Grammont opposite page 92, contemporary calf; corner cut from title-page and following page to remove name,, joints cracked and tender, corners worn, top and base of spine chipped. With a contemporary inscription of five lines in French on the recto of the front paste-down end-paper, 19th century autograph "Rebecca Hinds 1822" on title-page. Walpole (1717 - 1797) published this first at the Strawberry Hill Press in 1772, printing only 100 copies; this Dodsley imprint is the second edition and Walpole wrote an introduction for it. This is an out-of-series complimentary copy.From the library of Sir Campbell Stuart, with his bookplate to the front paste down. Stuart was a Canadian newspaper magnate, who ran propaganda operations for Britain during both World Wars.Illustrated with eight plates, and in-text wood engravings throughout, by Wilfred Jones.The memoirs of Philibert de Gramont, a French courtier and soldier of the seventeenth century, written by his brother-in-law, Antoine Hamilton. Philibert was the younger half-brother of Antoine III of Gramont. He was exiled from Louis XIV's court in 1662 for courting one of his mistresses, Anne-Lucie de la Mothe-Houdancourt. Upon this exile, Philibert found home at the court of Charles II in England, though he was allowed to return to France after a couple of years. When Philibert was 80, he supplied his brother-in-law, Antoine, with the material for these 'Memoirs&apos. Hamilton provided interesting passages in this volume on the history of the court of Charles II. Translated from French to English by Horace Walpole. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. A small amount of loss to the head of the front joint. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Light marks and rubbing to the boards and spine. Spine is a little discoloured. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good .
